About ECU and ODU...
If you look at future VT schedules, you will see three things jump out at you:
1) We are increasing the number of Power 5 equity opponents - primarily from the B1G. Just completed OSU, started Purdue, coming up is Penn State, Wisconsin, Michigan, WVU, Rutgers, Maryland. Starting in 2020, looks like we are shooting for two Power 5 OOC opponents per season! All good things, IMHO...
2) Our 2020 game with Liberty is the last FCS opponent on our schedule. Let's hope it's the last ever. Another good thing, IMHO...
3) ECU and ODU are on many future schedules. They are the only non-Power 5 games scheduled after 2020. So... how do you view this?
IMHO... if ECU and ODU are the cupcakes on the schedule, that's certainly much better than FCS schools like W&M, JMU, Liberty, Furman, Austin Peay, WCU, etc.
Once we start playing 10 Power 5 schools annually, I think the remaining 2 games will remain lower level. Are fans that are sick of ECU wanting some other teams from CUSA or MAC or American? Was Eastern Michigan, Western Michigan, Kent State better or worse? Back to UCF or UConn? Maybe Cincy?
For me... now that we are ramping up our schedule, we should look at lower level schools like ECU and ODU as opportunities for 2-for-1 deals. No more home & away deals with non Power 5 schools. Wouldn't shock me if thats where we are headed. And if it's the Pirates... I'm fine with it.
